Facebook is introducing emoji reaction buttons

Facebook is introducing emoji reaction buttons – and Ireland is first to get them

Facebook is to trial emoji “ type reactions” options for users responding to content, which kind of proves that merely being able to “like” something was somewhat limiting the human emotional spectrum. From Friday, Ireland (we are just so emotive here) and Spain will be the first to test the new feature. The ‘like’ button will still exist, but it will be accompanied by other reactions like joy, surprise, sadness, anger or love. Facebook’s new reactions do look a lot like a subset of emoji. They are reminiscent too of the stickers available in Gmail’s Hangouts (in addition to actual supported emoji), and the number of responses one can choose at the end of BuzzFeed articles.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, in a webcast last month, revealed the company’s plans to test better ways for users to share their emotional response to a post or comment on the service.

“I do think that it’s important to give people more options than just ‘like’ as a quick way to emote and share what they’re feeling on a post, so we’ve been working on this for a while,” Zuckerberg said in the webcast. He added, “It’s surprisingly complicated to make an interaction that you want to be that simple.”

I think this is a great move for Facebook. There is nothing worse than giving an inappropriate “like” to a someone’s status when they tell the cyber world something horrible/sad happened to them.

The new options will be available on both mobile and web interfaces.
